Ninja Pigs vs. Little Pigs:  Teaching Comparative Reading Through Read Alouds

Do you want to help your students learn to compare and contrast characters, details, and information in different texts? During this session, participants will use read-aloud texts to model, scaffold, and engage students in comparative reading.  

Learning Intentions: 

  • Explore comparative reading 
    –  What is it?
    –  What skills are needed?
    What does a vertical teaching progression look like? 
  • Discuss the benefits of reading aloud to teach important reading skills 
  • Explore ways to use read alouds to actively engage students in comparative reading 
  • Explore mentor read-aloud texts and related activities in Learning Link and online 
  • Discuss how to support ESE students 
  • Determine how to get families involved 


  • Teachers get paid $25.00 an hour for attendance and in-service points. 
  • Additional ESE certification points can be earned through a follow-up assignment. 
  • Ongoing support for implementation through is available for site-licensed schools. 

Who should attend? 

  • Any teacher who wants to learn how to teach comparative reading.  
  • Any administrator who wants to learn more about how to support teachers with teaching the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards, particularly those related to comparative reading.
